Poitín Tasting

The Umbrella Workshop

Private Bookings

Join us for a Poitín tasting, where you will taste four different poitíns. We’ll guide you through the ins and outs of Irish Distilling history and the once illicit spirit.

Poitín, a term stemming from the Gaelic work ‘pota’ which refers to the small copper pot still used by distillers today – is a long-established distilled Irish spirit traditionally brewed from cereals, molasses, sugar beet and/or potatoes. Despite there being no official date recorded as to when it was first produced, poitín has a long and infamous history, indeed, it was illegal all the way up to 1997 due to excise restrictions.

In addition, guests can continue their evening at one of our near-by, award-winning bars – The Sun Tavern with its extensive Irish Whiskey List, or neighbourhood cocktailbar, Discount Suit Company. Guests will be taken to their preferred bar by black cab where there will be a table reserved for their group at no extra cost.

The Poitín tasting is also available for private group tastings alongside our Mexican Spirits Tasting, East London Spirit Tasting, and an Irish Whiskey Tasting.

Where are we located

The Umbrella Workshop is located at 10 Cleeve Workshops. These buildings originally would have been used as workshops for specialist crafters back in the late 1800’s such as blacksmiths, armourers, weavers and many more. Today not much has changed, Cleeve Workshops is home to a community of like minded companies who care about their craft and their community. In the heart of Shoreditch, Cleeve Workshop’s is tucked away in a quiet serene neighbourhood that benefits from being in the centre of Shoreditch but also benefiting from the peace and quiet that is offered by Boundary Street.

More Tastings to come …
